Monday - Lab result and...

Yeah!  Bacterial growth!  Draw your agar plate to complete your first lab.

Then practise your agar plate streaking with jello plates before taking ONE of your bacterial colonies and streaking a new agar plate and then complete lab #2 (Antibacterial/antiseptic testing).

On Monday we are going to start planning our Virus Model Project (see instructions and list of viruses here).  SARS, Small Pox & Polio are already taken.  Please email me if you decide over the weekend which virus you would like to research as students can't do the same virus.

Wed - Test Day

After Unit 1 test, answer the following questions (use texts Orca p. 199-200 or Elephant p 355-357):
1. What is a virus?
2. What makes a virus unique?
3. What is the size range for viruses?
4. Name & explain the 2 parts that make up most viruses.
5. What are the 3 shapes of a virus and give an example of each type as well as what type of organism that they mainly infect?

Thurs - Unit 1 review

Review through extinction and endangered species.

Answered questions (use textbook) -
1.  What causes phenotypic variation?
2. How is phenotypic variation related to natural selection?
3. Define evolution in genetic terms? (e.g. allelic frequency, gene, gene pool)
4.  Scientists notice that individuals in a plant species are growing taller with each generation.  Explain what is happening to the gene pool of this population.

Well that activity dusted off some cobwebs!  Good work on almost everyone completing their homework.  Quick review of cell organelles today and then mitosis (see notes here) and then we checked our eggs labs.

I am so happy when students finally come back as my job is very strange (and really boring) without you!  I am really looking forward to our semester together!

You brave, brave souls!  Biology 11 at 7:50 in the morning!!  I will do my best to make this a lively class to help us all wake-up.
